County Division One

Hampshire vs Middlesex

A hundred from Liam Dawson, and his unbeaten partnership worth 190 with Nick Gubbins for the fifth wicket, helped Hampshire finish Day 1 in a strong position on 284/4. The duo got together with the team in trouble at 94/4 after opting to bat, and turned things around completely at the Rose Bowl.

Brief scores: Hampshire 284/4 (Liam Dawson 111*, Nick Gubbins 98*; Josh de Caires 2/93) vs Middlesex

Essex vs Warwickshire

Tom Westley and Daniel Lawrence struck fine hundreds and were involved in a 227-run stand for the third wicket to help Essex make a strong start in the game after they opted to bat first. However, they conceded some ground late in the day, going from 317/3 to 373/7 with Dom Bess and Jake Lintott - the two spinners - helping Warwickshire fight back.

Brief scores: Essex 391/7 (Daniel Lawrence 152, Tom Westley 114; Jake Lintott 2/56) vs Warwickshire

Surrey vs Lancashire

After getting bowled out for 274, the Lancashire bowlers reduced Surrey to 70/4 on a day dominated by bowlers. Opting to bowl at The Oval, Sean Abbott and Jordan Clark led the show for Surrey as they struck at regular intervals to finish with four-fers. Philip Salt was the only one from Lancashire to cross 50, while extras contributed a fair chunk as well with a total of 26 including 16 no balls. Lancashire then fought back with the ball, getting rid of Rory Burns and Dom Sibley early, before taking a couple more wickets in the final session.

Brief scores: Lancashire 274 all out (Philip Salt 56; Jordan Clark 4/47, Sean Abbott 4/71) vs Surrey 70/4 (Will WIlliams 2/22)

Northamptonshire vs Kent

A five-for from Wes Agar led a strong performance from Kent on the opening day after Northamptonshire opted to bat first. Arshdeep Singh chipped in with a couple of wickets as well as he combined with Agar to leave the hosts in early trouble. Walking in at 42/3, Rob Keogh led the fightback for Northamptonshire, but he fell three short of his hundred as they finished with 237. In response, Kent were well placed at 110/1 after a fifty from opener Tawanda Muyeye.

Brief scores: Northamptonshire 237 all out (Rob Keogh 97; Wes Agar 5/63) vs Kent 110/1 (Tawanda Muyeye 58*)

Somerset vs Nottinghamshire

Somerset were bundled out for just 163 after opting to bat first in Taunton as seamer Brett Hutton ran through them with a five-for. Dane Paterson and Matthew Carter also chipped in as the visitors put on a clinical show with the ball. In response, opener Ben Slater struck an unbeaten fifty and Somerset were trailing by only 18 at stumps with six wickets in hand.

Brief scores: Somerset 163 all out (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 38; Brett Hutton 5/34) vs Nottinghamshire 145/4 (Ben Slater 67*; Matt Henry 2/37)

County Division Two

Yorkshire vs Gloucestershire

Hundreds from Finlay Bean and George Hill headlined a strong batting display from Yorkshire on the opening day at Headingley after winning the toss and opting to bat. Gloucestershire actually had them in a spot of bother at 90 for 3 before Bean and Hill got together and put on 153 for the fourth wicket. Their partnership was followed by another impressive one between Hill and wicketkeeper-batter Jonathan Tattersall as the two added 111 to put the stamp on what was Yorkshire's day. Gloucestershire did fight back with a couple of late wickets though towards the close of play.

Brief scores: Yorkshire 393/6 (Finlay Bean 114, George Hill 101; MD Taylor 3/43) vs Gloucestershire

Glamorgan vs Sussex

Glamorgan were bowled out for 242 after they opted to bat in Cardiff against Sussex. They could've finished with an even lower total if not for a recovery from the lower middle-order after being reduced to 101 for 5. Billy Root made 66, while Timm van der Gugten scored 44 after the Sussex seamers - Henry Shipley, Nathan McAndrew and Aristides Karvelas - had dominated the opening exchanges. Root's fightback was ended by off-spinner Jack Carlson and it didn't take too long to wrap up the innings after his dismissal. In response, Sussex were 65 for 1 at stumps after losing Tom Haines early to Tim van der Gugten.

Brief scores: Glamorgan 242 all out (Billy Root 66; Nathan McAndrew 4/58) vs Sussex 65/1

Leicestershire vs Durham

Durham hammered 422 for 4 as the Leicestershire bowlers took quite a bit of punishment on the opening day in Leicester. The tone was set by the two openers - Alex Lees and Michael Jones - who combined for a 145-run stand. Jones played the aggressor in that stand, scoring 78 off just 70 balls, while Lees went about his business in usual fashion. Leicestershire were able to strike back with four wickets in a span of 23 overs - the last being that of Lees for 101, but that would be the last bit of joy for them in the day as Oliver Robinson and Graham Clark were involved in an unbeaten stand of 201. Robinson was unbeaten on 113, and Clark on 85 at stumps.

Brief scores: Durham 422/4 (Oliver Robinson 113, Alex Lees 101) vs Leicestershire

Worcestershire vs Derbyshire

Right-arm seamer Anuj Dal took a five-for as Worcestershire were bowled out for 237 after opting to bat at home. In response, Derbyshire finished the day on 32/2 as Navdeep Saini - making his Worcestershire debut before he leaves for India's tour of West Indies as part of the Test squad - struck early. Worcestershire had gotten off to a good start earlier in the day with an opening stand of 70, but things started to go wrong after that stand was broken. Even as captain Jake Libby looked solid to finish with 78, wickets fell quickly at the other end as Dal bowled a lovely spell.

Brief scores: Worcestershire 237 all out (Jake Libby 78; Anuj Dal 5/45) vs Derbyshire 32/2
