Rarely would you witness a double century knock get matched by another knock in the same ODI, as it happened in Hyderabad today. Shubman Gill's 208 powered India to a mammoth 349 on a tricky surface, evidenced by the fact that no one else in the innings reached 35. The match looked dead and buried when the visitors were reduced to 131/6 before Michael Bracewell (140) and Mitchell Santner (57) staged a barely believable comeback and almost pulled off a coup before falling agonizingly short by 12 runs.

Stats highlights from the first ODI in Hyderabad:

1 Gill became the first player to score a double hundred in ODIs against New Zealand. He surpassed the unbeaten 186 by Sachin Tendulkar at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in the same city in 1999, which was the previous highest individual score against New Zealand.

Double hundreds in ODIs:

Player Runs Balls Against Venue Date
Rohit Sharma 264 173 Sri Lanka Kolkata 13-Nov-14

Shubman Gill 208 149 New Zealand Hyderabad 18-Jan-23
Sachin Tendulkar 200* 147 South Africa Gwalior 24-Feb-10

At 23 years & 132 days, Gill became the youngest-ever player to score a double hundred in ODI. He eclipsed fellow teammate Ishan Kishan, who was 24 years & 145 days old when he smashed 210 against Bangladesh in Chattogram last month.

19 innings taken by Gill to reach 1000 ODI runs is the joint second-fastest for a batter in the format alongside Imam-ul-Haq. The fastest remains Fakhar Zaman who reached the milestone in one fewer inning while the previous quickest for India was 24 innings each by Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Fewest innings to 1000 ODI runs:

Player Inngs taken Days from debut Date

174 The difference of 174 runs between Gill (208) and the next highest scorer (Rohit Sharma's 34) is the third biggest such margin in an innings. The highest such difference is 198 runs when Rohit Sharma hit 264 and the next highest score was Virat Kohli's 66 against Sri Lanka, in Kolkata, in 2014.

2 Bracewell became the second batter in the history of ODI cricket to score multiple hundreds batting at #7 or below after MS Dhoni. This was his second three-figure score in the format after making an unbeaten 127 off just 82 balls in a chase of 301, after walking in at 120/5 against Ireland in Dublin last July. Overall, his 140 is the joint third-highest individual score for a player batting at seven or lower in ODIs.

57 balls taken by Bracewell is the third fastest ODI century for New Zealand behind Corey Anderson (36 balls) and Jesse Ryder (46 balls), both of whom achieved the feat against the West Indies in Queenstown on the New Year's Day in 2014. Only Shahid Afridi - in 45 balls in Kanpur in 2005 - has reached hundred in fewer deliveries against India.

The 162-run partnership between Bracewell and Santner is the third highest stand for seventh wicket or below in ODI cricket and the highest ever for New Zealand, bettering 123 by Jacob Oram & Neil Broom against Bangladesh in Napier in 2010. It was also the highest against India surpassing 148 by Mahmudullah & Mehidy Hasan in Mirpur last month.

Highest partnership for 7th wicket or lower in ODIs:
