The importance of having a wrist spinner in every team has resulted in the rise of a slew of high quality tweakers across India and Murugan Ashwin is one of those who queued up for greater glory. His breakthrough performance came during the 2015-16 Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, the premier Twenty20 domestic tournament in India.

He took 10 wickets for Tamil Nadu and was rewarded with a 4.5 crores Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). He put up a creditable show, picking up 7 wickets and emerging as a spinner to keep a keen eye on. Having missed out on the next season, Ashwin fell behind state mate, Washington Sundar, in Tamil Nadu's starting roster, but his career seemed to be on the upward curve after he was bought for Rupees 2.2 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

IPL - Through the years

A regular net bowler over the years for Chennai Super Kings, the Dhoni-Fleming duo roped Murugan Ashwin into the Rising Pune Supergiants set-up in 2016 for a whopping price of Rs. 4.5 crore. The leg-break, who at times bowled more than the senior Ashwin (Ravichandran), took seven wickets in 10 matches, but his economy rate was on the higher side - above 8. RPS released him and Delhi Daredevils bought him for Rs. 1 crore. However, he warmed the benches and didn’t feature in a single game. A year later, he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore structure, but he faced a similar problem - he found it tough to get into the playing XI with Yuzvendra Chahal being the regular spinner. In 2019, Ashwin represented Kings XI Punjab, under his fellow state-mate’s (R Ashwin) captaincy as he pocketed for his base price of 20 lakhs INR.

Ashwin spent a couple of years at the Punjab franchise without making much of an impact. But he got a shot in his arm ahead of IPL 2022 when Mumbai Indians got his services for 1.6 crores INR. But MI suffered a horrific season and he was released after the season. RR wanted to add to their reserves of Chahal and Ravi Ashwin and they added Murugan to their squad by picking him for 20 lakhs INR.
