Stumps - England trail by 195

Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root see off that tricky little period before stumps. England will be pleased with how they fared with the ball but they would be in a much better position had they not lost more than one or two wickets at the most in reply. By removing the top order, Australia have ensured that they are still in the game. Root, Bairstow and Stokes have a huge role to play tomorrow with the bat.

It's Marsh's day

He is making an impact once again. Zak Crawley and Joe Root were involved in a nice little partnership after Cummins struck twice early. But Marsh comes into the attack and makes an impact with the ball this time. He gets a bit of movement and takes the ball away from the batter and Crawley edges it behind to the slip cordon.

Cummins strikes again

Well, well Australia are up for the fight. Pat Cummins is leading the charge and it is Harry Brook who has to depart this time. Coming in at No.3 Brook fails to grab his chance as he edges a delivery on a good length behind. Smith takes the catch as Australia celebrate. They are pumped up. England need Joe Root to bail them out again.

Early strike

Pat Cummins strikes early for Australia and this is a huge wicket given Ben Duckett hit two fifties in the previous Test. Alex Carey takes a very good catch behind the stumps to help Australia land the early blow.

Australia 263 all out

Excellent comeback from England. At one stage, this didn't seem possible the way Mitch Marsh was going. Australia were 240/4 after that blistering partnership but Marsh's wicket opened the floodgates as England ran riot post Tea. Mark Wood picks up the final wicket as well and finishes with a five-wicket haul. The day has so far belonged to the comeback men.

Timber!!

Mark Wood returns and Mark Wood makes an impact immediately. It was too hot to handle for Starc as he sees his middle stump get knocked out. This has been an excellent start to the session for England as they claw back to regain the advantage.

Woakes strikes again

He is proving to be the key for England on his return. After removing Marsh before Tea, he has now dismissed Travis Head as well. So the two set batters are back in the hut now. Can England capitalise on this and ensure Australia don't go past 300?

Marsh finally falls for 118

England are relieved. That's the end of the massive partnership. And the players also depart for Tea with that dismissal. Marsh kept going and had taken his strike rate beyond 100 at one point. But Woakes manages to stop that rampage as the batter inside edges one onto his thigh pad that balloons to the slip cordon where the easy chance is grabbed. What a stunning innings!! A 155-run partnership comes to an end.

Stunning century

Wow, what a knock!! Almost four years after playing his last Test, Marsh returns to the Test XI with a bang!! This has been a cracking innings. He just kept going after the attack throughout the session and he takes on Moeen now to smash a four, a six followed by a single to bring up a century that has come almost at a strike rate of 100. England are stunned.

England under the pump

This has been a majestic partnership and no wonder England are feeling the heat. They were completely on top after the first session but the second session has gone awry. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head have taken the attack to the opposition and the former in particular has been very severe on the English attack. The century stand has been brought up off just 118 balls. England badly need to break this partnership.

50 for Marsh

What a return to Test cricket for Mitchell Marsh. He hasn't played a game in this format for Australia in nearly four years. But he replaces an injured Green and straightaway comes up with a very important knock. His counterattacking fifty has resurrected Australia. Can he go and get a big one?

Half-century stand

Mitchell Marsh is doing some damage. He has been scoring runs at a pretty fair clip and has already raced into the 40s. Marsh and Head have now added more than 50 for the fifth wicket and this is turning out to be a vital partnership for the visitors. Can they keep going?

Dropped

Not a happy return for England after lunch. Joe Root has dropped a regulation chance at first slip that would have seen Marsh return to the pavilion. The allrounder had already smashed a six earlier in the over so he might look to play positive cricket.

Lunch - Australia 91/4

England bag the morning session. The crowd is giving them a rousing reception as they make their way back to the pavilion. England have been excellent with the ball and they have bagged four huge wickets. One more wicket post lunch and they will be having a go at the lower order soon.

Smith falls

Headingley erupts as Smith falls just at the stroke of lunch. What a moment this is as Australia's premier batter falls at a crucial juncture. He edges one behind off Broad and this time Bairstow does pouch the regulation chance. However, Smith doesn't think he has hit it and opts for a review but the replays confirm the spike. He is in disbelief but has to walk back.

Costly drops

Bairstow is having a poor game behind the stumps. He has already handed Steve Smith a reprieve off Ollie Robinson before Labuschange's dismissal and now Travis Head gets a lifeline as well. He had to dive full length on full occasions but could have and should have grabbed them both. What a huge difference it could have made!!

Huge wicket

Chris Woakes strikes!! And it's the big wicket of Labuschagne. He bowled wide of the crease and got one to straighten after pitching to trouble the batter and take his outside edge. Root takes the catch at the slip cordon and England are delighted.

Rattled!!

Mark Wood has been seriously cranking up the pace and he gets his reward. Wood breaches Khawaja's defence and shatters the stumps. England are pumped!! Steve Smith is walking out to bat in his 100th Test match and he is greeted by plenty of boos from the Headingley crowd.

What a start for England!!

Stuart Broad gets David Warner again!! And the Headingley crowd erupts as England strike in the very first over of the Test match. Warner could have left it alone as it was bowled outside off but he goes for a poke and edges it to second slip. This is the 16th time he has been dismissed by Broad. Incredible!!

Toss - England opt to bowl

The last time these two teams played here, we had an epic finish with Ben Stokes pulling off a blinder. England have a chance to do something similar having opted to bowl first today. There is a bit of grass on this surface so England had no hesitation in bowling first. Like England, Australia have three changes as well. Nathan Lyon has been replaced by Todd Murphy as expected but they will also miss the services of Cam Green. He has had a strain and hasn't been risked. Mitchell Marsh replaces him in the XI. Scott Boland comes in for Josh Hazlewood.

Teams:

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Todd Murphy, Scott Boland

England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow(w), Ben Stokes(c), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad

England pull the trigger

While we wait to see Australia's playing XI, England have already confirmed theirs. And they have taken a big call by dropping veteran James Anderson. Shouldn't really come as a surprise given his form in the series. Desperate times do call for desperate measures. Josh Tongue is out of the XI as well and Ollie Pope is anyway ruled out of the series. England's tail was pretty long in the last game but they have brought back Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes this time. Mark Wood has returned to the XI as well.

Build up

Where do we even begin? The dust has barely settled down since the conclusion of the Lord's Test that had us hooked for multiple reasons. But after just three days, the players are going to be back on the field again. There's plenty to look forward to in this third Test that is extremely crucial for the home side. It looked like they might pull off an epic chase at Lord's on that dramatic final day. But despite Ben Stokes' heroics, it was Australia who emerged on top.

However, Australia didn't come out on top without making a noise. Jonny Bairstow's dismissal didn't go down well with the English camp and the public as well. Players from both sides have had plenty to say on that mode of dismissal and you would expect a bit of animosity to carry forward into this game as well given the short turnaround. Like our correspondent Bharat Sundaresan mentioned, it has given a weird spark to the Ashes. Weird but a spark nonetheless.

Given Australia are the current holders, a win or a draw here would ensure they retain the urn. They can make Steve Smith's 100th Test a memorable one by making it 3-0. Nobody has had a better record than Smith after playing 99 Test matches. His incredible numbers have been dissected by our stats man ahead of his big game. Can England spoil Smith's party and keep the series alive? Will they ditch Bazball and opt for a conservative route to break the rut? You can bet your house on them not doing that. Welcome to the live blog for the opening day of this third Test match from Headingley.
