Hello and welcome to the Live Blog for Day 2 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's. Hit refresh for the latest updates.

DAY 2, STUMPS | England - 278/4, trail by 138 runs

An exciting session of play, dominated by short deliveries and England's no-holds-barred approach, which led to quick wickets. But Harry Brook and Ben Stokes, with their contrasting approach, raised a half-century stand and were unbeaten as the hosts narrowed the deficit.

Reprieve for Brook

Brook is also eager to take on the short deliveries and he should have fallen to one from Cummins, playing the pull. But Labschagne puts down the catch at square leg.

Root also falls to a short delivery

Looking to pull a short ball from Starc, Root gets a top edge. Smith runs back from backward square, covers good ground, before taking a diving, one-handed catch. TV replays are sought before Root heads back on 10. England are 222/4.

Duckett misses century

Australia's persistence with the short ball pays off as Duckett top-edges a pull off Hazlewood to hand Warner a catch at long leg. He departs for 98, leaving England at 208/3.

Green ends productive stand with Pope's wicket

Green, guilty of overstepping multiple times, finally makes an impact as he dismisses Pope for 42 to end a 96-run stand. Pope is early into a pull, getting the toe end, and finds Smith in the deep. Root too is foxed by a short delivery, gloving it to the 'keeper. But the bowler has overstepped, much to the disappointment of Australia, and to the delight of the crowd at Lord's.

Lyon off the field

Lyon seems to be in a bother as he seems to have tweaked something and is in a lot of pain. The physio is getting a look beyond the boundary ropes and it appears like a calf injury. This could be a big moment in this Ashes for Lyon, who only just became the first bowler to play 100 consecutive Tests.

Duckett a bit jittery after Tea

He plays and misses against Green, isn't in control against a short delivery, and is saved by an inside edge as a Lyon delivery raps him on the pad. Meanwhile, he has also scored runs at a fair clip, including a boundary past gully off Green to bring the deficit below 250. Cummins, meanwhile, is struck near his right eye, while trying to stop a ball, and that part is swollen. He's off the field for a while, getting a check-up from the physio. Duckett then scores another four off Green, essaying a cover drive.

DAY 2, TEA | England - 145/1 (30 overs), trail by 271 runs

Although they lost Crawley for 48, it's been a productive session for England. Duckett, who struck a four off Starc to reach his fifty, struck one more off Lyon to extend his boundaries tally to 6. Pope has given good support with his 32 not out while Duckett is batting on 62, with the pair having extended their stand to 54.

Lyon strikes to end opening stand

A wicket against the run of play for Australia as Lyon dismisses Crawley for 48. The batter comes down the track but the ball spins past him and Carey collects the ball well and brings down the bails. England are 91/1.

Positive start from England openers after Lunch

Crawley is dealing in boundaries after the Lunch break. A straight drive off Cummins is followed by a whip to midwicket and a cover drive off Starc off successive deliveries. Duckett welcomes Hazlewood into the attack with a drive past cover point for a four to power England past 50.

DAY 2, LUNCH | England 13/0 (4 overs), trail by 403 runs

Australian pacers have found swing and movement and troubled the England openers on a few occasions. But Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett come through unscathed.

Crawley survives lbw shout

Starc gets one to swing into Crawley sharply in the opening over and raps him on the pad. There is a huge shout for lbw but it's not given. Replays justify the umpire's decision, and also Australia's decision to not opt for the DRS, as the ball is just missing the leg-stump.

INNINGS END | Australia 416 all-out (100.4 overs)

End of Australia's innings as Hazlewood departs after handing Root at catch at first slip to give Robinson his third wicket. A good start for England on Day 2 as they have limited the damage from Australia. However, they would have hoped to restrict them to a lower total, which wasn't to be as Smith's 32nd Test ton and his aggressive approach on Day 2 set up Australia's march past 400. The visitors scored 77 runs this morning but they too won't be happy with the fact that they lost their last seven wickets for the addition of only 100 runs.

Lyon departs

Robinson bowls one short to Lyon who dispatches it to the boundary. But he persists with the short ball and is rewarded as Lyon gets a top edge to depart for 7. Australia are 408/9.

Australia cross 400

Cummins has played a handy knock so far while Lyon has hung around as they help Australia to the 400 mark in 97 overs.

Tongue strikes to dismiss Smith

End of an excellent knock as Smith departs for 110. It's a full delivery from Tongue and the batter looks to drive it hard but ends up getting a thick edge. Duckett, at gully, holds on to a good, low catch to see the back of Australia's No.4. The visitors are 393/8.

32nd Test ton for Smith

An excellent knock from the No.4, who gets to three-figures with a shot past cover for a four off Anderson. He celebrates it with another boundary as he helps Australia towards 400. 54 runs have come off 12 overs in the first hour as Australia move to 393/7.

Fewest innings to 32 Test 100s: 174 - S Smith; 176 - R Ponting; 179 - S Tendulkar; 193 - Younis Khan.

Most hundreds in Ashes Tests: 19 - D Bradman; 12 - J Hobbs/ S Smith; 10 - S Waugh.

Smith crosses 2000 runs in England

While wickets have fallen around him, Smith has been untroubled as he collects three boundaries to move to 99. In the process, he has also crossed 2000 runs in Tests in England, becoming only the fourth visiting batter to do so.

Anderson finally strikes

Finally, a wicket for Anderson in this Test. Starc goes for an expansive drive away from his body and ends up edging the ball to the 'keeper. Australia are 358/7.

Broad removes Carey early on Day 2

Runs have come quite easily on the second morning despite the overcast conditions. Carey has scored 10 runs to the leg side in the first two overs, including a couple of leg-glances for successive boundaries off Broad. But the bowler hits back by bowling one into Carey's pads and having him out leg-before. The onfield call was not out but England review successfully. Australia are 351/6.

Update:Play will begin on time. No rain around for the moment. Meanwhile, Andrew Strauss, along with children of the Ruth Strauss foundation, ring the bell in memory of the late Ruth Strauss.

Weather update:It's the Red for Ruth Day at Lord's but I'm afraid the start is going to be delayed. It's currently raining.

Recap: What happened on Day 1

A collective batting performance from Australia helped them gain early ascendancy in the second Test. David Warner's 66 provided a solid platform in trying conditions after England opted to bowl. Steve Smith then put on two century partnerships - with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head - to put Australia in a good position to achieve a sizable total. Josh Tongue bowled well as he bagged the wickets of Usman Khawaja and Warner but the other pacers weren't quite up to the mark. Smith was untroubled while Head's counter-attack further deflated England. Joe Root's double strike towards the end of the day, getting Head and Cameron Green in the same over, gave England something to cheer about. But with Smith still around, and capable batters down the order, England need to come up with a better bowling performance if they are to restrict Australia. Read the Day 1 report here.

Australia strong-arm insipid England

The delivery to dismiss Head was a clever one, as Root predicted the left-hander's intention of stepping out. The wicket of Cameron Green straight after was a bonus as the young all-rounder played arguably the first poor shot of his career. The dismissal was no surprise to him as he celebrated the Head wicket with more emotion and passion than usual, pointing at his captain on the boundary and his coach on the team balcony screaming, "I told you... I told you.." But with the hosts now under pressure, they need a strong Day 2 to stay alive in the Test and also to keep the naysayers of Bazball at bay for a little while longer. For, they seem primed to start pointing fingers at this potentially era-defining English team and start shouting, "I told you... I told you..it won't work.." Here's Bharat S's analysis of the opening day's play.
