Hello and welcome to the Live Blog for Day 1 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's. Hit refresh for the latest updates.

DAY 1, STUMPS | Australia - 339/5 (83 overs)

Despite the late strikes, it is Australia's day thanks to a collective batting performance. Steve Smith, who was involved in two century partnerships, is unbeaten on 85 and will be looking to make it a big one.

ICYMI: Steve Smith completed 15,000 international runs today. Of the 41 batters to have done so till date, his average of 49.67 (currently) is bettered only by Virat Kohli (53.44).

Root strikes twice

A good bowling change that for England as Root removes dangerman Head. The batter comes down the track but Root bowls it wide and the ball spins further away. Bairstow manages to hold no to the ball and bring the bails down in time to have Head stumped. Green falls in the same over, undone by extra bounce as he attempts a pull, hitting the ball only as far as Anderson at mid-off. Australia are 316/5.

Smith survives

Smith is rapped on his pad after walking too far across to a Tongue delivery and is given not out. England don't opt for the review, with replays revealing that it was umpire's call. In the same over, Head manages two fours as he enters the 70s. The partnership has crossed 100 and Australia have gone past 300 and are looking good for more.

Fifty for Head

He gets there off only 48 deliveries and is happy to take on the short deliveries. He gets to 50 with a pull for a four off Tongue and also executes a confident cover drive off Broad for his seventh four.

Half-century stand

Only 54 deliveries for the fifty partnership for the fourth wicket, with Head having contributed 35 of those. Tongue and Broad have also erred with their lines and Head has made them pay. 250 is up for Australia in the 64th over.

Fifty for Smith

A crisp drive through cover off Robinson for three helps Smith bring up a 102-ball fifty. Travis Head, at the other end, has dealt in a flurry of boundaries, with Robinson at the receiving end. Australia are 230/3 with a good partnership developing.

Most consecutive 50-plus scores at Lord's (Tests): 4 - Frank Woolley (1921-1926); 4 - Warren Bardsley (1912-1926); 4 - Nasser Hussain (2001-2002); 4 - Steve Smith (2015-2023).

Robinson strikes to end century stand

Smith and Labuschagne extend their partnership past 100 before Australia lose their third wicket. Robinson's delivery was pitched outside off and Labuschagne looks to defend but ends up edging it to the 'keeper to depart for 47. Australia are 198/3.

DAY 1, TEA | Australia - 190/2 (50 overs)

Another good session for Australia thanks to the unbroken partnership between Smith and Labuschagne. They have added 94 so far off only 128 deliveries, with Smith batting on 38 and Labuschagne on 45.

Labuschagne reviews successfully

Labuschagne offers no shot to Broad and is rapped on the pads, and this time the umpire rules it out. But the batter reviews it and replays, which reveal the ball to be missing the stumps, force the umpire to reverse the decision. Smith, meanwhile, crosses 9000 Test runs with a four off Stokes. England lose a review in Broad's next over, going up for a leg-before shout, as Labuschagne gets an inside edge.

Fastest to 9,000 Test runs (by innings): 172 - Kumar Sangakkara; 174 - Steve Smith; 176 - Rahul Dravid; 177 - Brian Lara; 177 - Ricky Ponting.

Steve Smith is the fastest in terms of matches taken (99), bettering Lara, who had reached the mark in his 101st Test.

Half-century stand

Fifty up for the pair of Smith and Labuschagne, coming at less than a run a ball with a flurry of boundaries in the last few overs. Stokes brings himself on but he has overstepped on multiple occasions and is also struck for two fours by Labuschagne. Australia move to 154/2.

Labuschagne gets going

It's been a while since Labuschagne scored a four, and he makes up with three fours in a Broad over. He also shoulders arms to an incoming delivery and is rapped on the pads but the umpire rules in favour of the batter, and England don't review.

Smith reviews successfully

Having struck two successive fours off Broad through cover, Smith is given out caught behind in the same over. But Smith reviews straightaway and replays reveal that there was no edge, much to the dismay of England as there was a noise.

Tongue wins battle against Warner

Having troubled him a couple of times, Tongue has Warner bowled with a nip-backer. The opener departs for 66, leaving Australia at 96/2.

Pope goes off the field

Trying to make a diving stop in the slip cordon, Pope appears to have injured his shoulder and he walks off the field. England will be hoping that it's nothing serious.

Rain plays hide and seek

Anderson finds the outside edge of Labuschagne's bat early in the second session but the ball falls short of Crawley at slip. Meanwhile, another rain interruption at Lord's has forced the players off the field briefly, and they are back not too long after.

Day 1, Lunch | Australia 73/1 (23.1 overs)

The Australian openers were tested with persistent outside-off lines but they managed to get through the session almost unscathed until Khawaja decided to shoulder arms to a Tongue delivery and was bowled in the final over before Lunch. He departed for 17, having batted for 70 deliveries. Australia, though, will be the happier team heading into the break, having denied England too many wickets. But they need to continue the good work and will hope for Warner to make it big.

Fifty for Warner

He gets it off only 66 deliveries, scoring at a good rate for his fifty. Having struck six fours, the left-hander gets to the milestone with his first six, pulling a Tongue delivery over the fence.

Warner, Khawaja raise half-century stand

Warner has scored the bulk of the runs in the half-century stand which has taken some time, with the pair bringing it up in the 19th over. In the previous over, Warner scored a couple of fours off Tongue in his first over. Australia are 52/0.

Lucky break for Warner

Broad finds the outside edge of Warner's bat but Ollie Pope puts down the catch at fourth slip.

And they're back

Only a minor delay, a touch over 10 minutes, as the players are back on the field.

Rain stops play

The players are off the field as it has started drizzling. Not too heavy at the moment and it's only the pitch that's covered. Hopefully, this will be a short delay.

Missed opportunity

Khawaja has been having some trouble with deliveries outside off, missing a couple of them and even edging an Anderson delivery. But Root puts down a tough chance at first slip.

The start

Warner plays and misses outside off to an Anderson delivery in the first over and then is away with a boundary through cover. Some interruption in the next over as 'Just stop oil' protesters come onto the field and sprinkle some orange powder. Bairstow lifts one of the protesters and takes him past the boundary ropes. He's off to the pavilion to get a change of dress.

ICYMI: Lyon is making is 100th consecutive Test appearance

Players with 100 consecutive Test appearances: 159 - Alastair Cook; 153 - Allan Border; 107 - Mark Waugh; 106 - Sunil Gavaskar; 101 - Brendon McCullum; 100* - Nathan Lyon.

Toss and teams:

Ben Stokes wins the toss and opts to bowl. Australia make one change - Mitchell Starc replaces Scott Boland.

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, James Anderson

Build-up:

Despite their loss in the opening Test, England have insisted they'll stick to their 'Bazball' style of play and if anything, they've promised an extra dose of aggression. They have also announced their eleven before the match, bringing in the extra pacer in Josh Tongue in place of Moeen Ali. There was generous grass on the wicket and going by the visuals, there will be help for the quicker men compared to what was offered at Edgbaston last week. Australia, meanwhile, will stick to their own methods and wait to prey on England's mistakes. They have announced their 12, with Mitchell Starc being part of it. It remains to be seen if the left-arm seamer is brought into the eleven. Click here for the full preview.
